Short Landing
Acme News photo, dated April 7, 1943

A U.S. Army Air Corps pilot lands his trainer on only 180 yards of runway at Gunther Field in Montgomery, Alabama. Gunther was one of the USAAC's flying schools, and it appears that short landings were practiced pretty regularly, with the "clothesline" perhaps indicating when the pilot was to begin getting his wheels down.
