Under-Armed Army
Wide World Press photo, dated August 11, 1940

Members of the 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, are shown being armed with weapons confiscated by the Chief of Police of Ogdensburg, New York. The regiment was ill-armed as there were not enough weapons issued to go around, and the civilian weapons — including BB guns, .22-caliber rifles, shotguns, and high-powered hunting rifles — were handed out for the First Army War Games being held in the vicinity. See the Nov. 23 photo for a picture from the same series.
