The World War II Photo of the Week for 14 February 2005

Suribachi Joe ... Famed Associated Press war pool photographer Joe Rosenthal on Iwo Jima, February 1945. He took a number of incredible photographs during the invasion, with the most memorable capturing the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi perhaps the most recognized photograph of World War II. This particular photograph shows him on the top of Suribachi, probably shortly after taking his famous photo. Ships of the invasion fleet can be seen in the distance behind him. His camera is visible near his waist.
