The World War II Photo of the Week for 22 March 2004

Sad Reminder ... Two Marines killed in action on Enogi, New Georgia Island, rest under simple wooden crosses, reminding us all of the cost of freedom. Someone has taken the time to render the names and serial numbers of the fallen pair on the bottom of their canteen cups, and attached them to the markers. The photo is dated September 24, 1943; nearly two more years and thousands more Marines will die before Japan surrenders.
