The World War II Photo of the Week for 29 March 2004

Rearm and Reload ... A large number of ordnance and mechanics ratings swarm over a fighter on a Navy carrier, gassing it up (note fuel hose at left) and rearming (note armorers on the wings, opening the access ports for machine gun ammo) it for combat. Note the naval aviator waiting in the cockpit, ready to go out again. The location is given as the Gilbert and Marshall Islands; the date, February 14, 1942. The cry "Avenge Pearl Harbor!" surely must be ringing in the ears of these men, just nine weeks removed from that fateful Sunday in December 1941.
