Battlefield Communion ...

A U.S. Navy Chaplain gives communion to surviving Marines of the 5th Marine Division during an outdoor mass held on the top of Mount Suribachi after the brutal battle for Iwo Jima was over. Note the two jarheads at the right holding up two panels of camouflaged material to prevent the wind from scattering the chaplain's mass kit. The chalice is visible on a makeshift altar supported by row of helmets. The date is February 23, 1945. Official U.S. Marine Corps photograph by Sergeant L. R. Burmeister.
