The World War II Photo of the Week for 20 September 2004

I Guess You're Wondering Why I Called You All Here ... Combat-ready GIs crowd the deck of an LCI on their way to Normandy. Of particular note is a ground-borne member of the 101st Airborne Division, who appears at upper left. The "Screaming Eagle" patch and airborne arch is unmistakably clear. He's got a rubber gas-mask bag across his chest and goggles on his helmet. Other details include troopers carrying the short "tanker" version of the M-1 Garand rifle, some heavy weapons, combat medics, officers, and lots of GI equipment. Official U.S. Navy photograph, dated June 14, 1944, D-Day plus 8 (eights days after the initial landings).
