Convoy Busting ... A 9th USAAF P-47 Thunderbolt has just conducted a low-level attack on this German convoy on French road on September 11, 1944. The convoy, carrying ammunition and gasoline, was part of the German forces retreating eastward after the Normandy breakout. The P-47 was flown by Lt. Col. Louis T. Houck of Todd, North Carolina, who came in at "deck level" and sprayed the convoy with 50-cal. incendiaries, causing one vehicle after another to burst into flames until much of the convoy was ablaze and the road blocked. |
