The World War II Photo of the Week for 29 December 2003

Building An Airfield ... A group of black U.S. Army Aviation Engineers are shown building a USAAF landing strip using the famous perforated steel plank (PSP) system. Each plank measured two feet wide by ten feet long. The holes would allow water to drain away. (More information on the exploits of Army Aviation Engineers in the ETO is available here.) Note the mixture of prewar campaign hats and slouch-style "boonie" hats worn by the men. ACME Press photo. |
